We can’t help but admit that nostalgia is a strong tool for bonding strangers together.

“The Millennials did it better” and “Y2K did it better” aren’t unfamiliar slogans. It seems like being born in different decades affect a lot of us, and the labels don’t help either.

However, we can’t help but admit that nostalgia is a strong tool for bonding strangers together. Remember switching on Channel 33 after school to catch Ninja Turtles while eating your lunch, and simply forgoing your nap-times for that? (Oh, how we wish for the luxury of nap-times now).

Nostalgic marketing works well — not only does it appeal to a wider segment of the population, but it also binds the different generations together. No surprise then, when our childhood favourites stake their high-profile comebacks one by one, hoping to pull on the heartstrings of millennials as we all sit back and think “Oh, those days were good”.

So hold on to your Game Boys and Digivices as we dive into the many things we loved back in the day!

Games, games and more games.

The iPad may be today’s de facto casual gaming device among kids, but to millennials, nothing will ever compare to the “pioneer generation” Game Boy. .

A prime example would be, you guessed it right, Pokemon — best played in faded colour and with a tinny soundtrack; basically, on a Game Boy Color.

When Pokemon Go arrived, we went from watching Pokemon trainers to becoming Pokemon trainers ourselves. While enjoyable, years of rooting for Ash and his companions through a screen are nothing compared to the immersive, engaging experience offered on Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Go also served to bond the generations. In fact, 40% of people who downloaded Pokemon Go are over the age of 25 years old.

Sadly, the only Pokemon that the generations are to come will remember Pokemon as will be the Pokemon Go game.

Neighbourhoods before they were hip

Mature estates such as Toa Payoh and Tiong Bahru used to be just . These places might have been popular paktor haunts among our parents, or even grandparents, but they slowly became sleepy towns in the 90s.

Thanks to a growing cafe scene , these places are making a comeback among today’s crowd.  Be treated to a modern display of old-school, artisanal shops as you walk down the alleys of Yong Siak Street. On one side, you have hipster barbershops for men,  and on the other, the famed Tiong Bahru Food Market, known for their chwee kueh.

As old meets new at Tiong Bahru, the best of both worlds takes on another level of meaning when the delicatessen Tiong Bahru Bakery and restaurant Ah Bong’s Italian are nearly neighbours.

You can definitely feel the “traditional” elements as you walk along Yong Siak Street. The display of preserved architecture in a district filled with young businesses is probably the best way to showcase an effortless blend of “modern meets traditional”.

Perhaps one of the greatest examples of gentrification, Tiong Bahru is the prototype for neighbourhoods that are making their way back to life

We can’t talk trends without fashion!

The way trends change over time can be seen in fashion. With every decade comes a prominent trend that marks a new era in fashion. From punk rock in the 1970’s to bold colours in 1980’s, and preppy orgrunge looks in 1990’s, you will be able to easily differentiate the years with fashion.

One of the obvious trends that has evidently made its comeback is in chokers. Leading choker trend-setters are famous celebrities like Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Katy Perry and Queen B.

Before any of the 21st century idols made the choker a thing, it was our 1990s celebrities that led the trend, namely Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears.

All of which would immediately make sense at the sight of this photo: The Tattoo Choker.

Well, they say fashion is an endless cycle where trends come and go.

Old tech grandfather meets young boy

Technology has become part and parcel of our lives. With countless new apps and tech startups launched every day, it seems like nothing can capture our interest for more than a few months at most.

The relaunch of the iconic Nokia 3310 has sparked quite a bit of excitement over the past week. Remember that familiar tune that plays once you on your phone?

The Nokia 3310 was basically the first and coolest mobile phone of our generation. Its indestructible, long-lasting battery  truly harks back to the days when our phones were a much simpler device.

Whether you admit it or not, we all probably gasped at the news of its relaunch. The Nokia 3310 truly exemplifies why the 90s are making ground-shaking comebacks.

The fact that something so “uncompetitive” is bravely re-entering the market in today’s tech world is the epitome of the longevity and substantial simplicity  of the 90’s. Talk about an epic comeback!

And yes, the snake game that only a true 90’s kid would have known about will be included in the phone.

Shows and Movie Characters

Before the days of YouTube, the TV was all we had. We also met our various childhood idols onscreen — Kathleen from Hi-5, Danny Phantom, and even Patrick Star. Besides your circle of real-life friends, these characters helped you explore a world away from your own.

When discussing childhood idols and shows, we definitely cannot forget superheroes. Power Rangers is probably first thing we think of when it comes to 90’s superheroes. Just try and tell me you don’t remember the water fountain that pushes the Blue Ranger up during the introduction of the show. Or the giant Megazord that all 5 rangers can summon. That is what bonds the 90’s generation together!

An epic comeback is underway with the Power Rangers movie set to hit Singapore cinemas on 23 March 2017. Yes, there have been earlier films about the Power Rangers, but this upcoming iteration may just be the one with the highest budget yet.

The film follows the story of five average teens who are unexpectedly thrust with the responsibility of being the new Power Rangers. They find themselves in an underground spaceship with a talking wall, and five “glowing” colours, one for each of them.

The gifted teens start to experience superpowers that will set them on a journey to save humanity.

They will struggle together to fight the assault by the powerful witch, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) with army of stones called golem and her powerful and giant golden master, Goldar.

“Together we are more” is the tagline for the new movie. With nostalgia and all that 90s, it’s time to throw it back and remember where we all came from.

So to the true 90’s kids, it’s time to go forth and create something new that our future generations will live for.

The new movie also seems to take on a much darker tone, creating a deliciously fresh and modern appeal. For Power Rangers fans, watching our beloved characters in this new grim and realistic universe is exactly what we’re excited for.
